Gibson Montreux Jazz Guitar Competition 2004
In 2004, the Montreux Jazz Festival and Gibson Guitar created the Guitar Competition to provide an opportunity for promising young musicians to display their creative talents through a blues guitar competition. The Semi Finals and the Final of the Annual Guitar Competition will take place in the Montreux Palace, the city’s best-known hotel, and is a featured part of the Montreux Jazz Festival. This is the perfect environment environment for young musicians to gain the recognition of an international audience.
The Guitar Competition is sponsored by Gibson Guitar Corp. and is also supported by the IAJE (International Association of Jazz Educators), the Montreux Conservatory and the Montreux Palace.
Jury
The competition is placed under the patronage of Quincy Jones, ambassador extraordinary to the Montreux Jazz Festival. The jury will include three guitarists and two famous artists. A public prize is also awarded.
Details of the Competition
General rules and regulations
- Musical pieces are to be presented as instrumental versions only, accompanied by a duo (bass and drum). Scores should be sent in advance of competition dates in order to be given to the accompanying musicians.
- Competitors will perform in alphabetical order. The same order will be maintained for the remaining performances.
- Semi-finals: Public performances of 15 minutes in front of the jury, in July 2004 (specific dates tba).
- Finals: Finalists will perform the day following the semi-finals, in July 2004 (specific date tba).
- Competitors should present different pieces for the semi-finals and the finals.
- All performances are open to the public.
The awards ceremony will take place immediately following the finals.
Recordings
The MJF Competition reserves the right to record audio and video material of the competitors’ performances and shares ownership of this material with Gibson Guitar Corp. The candidate gives all rights for radio and television transmission, as well as for eventual recording production to the Montreux Jazz Festival Foundation. The recording, if any, will be done with a NAGRA 5.
Entry admission
The Competition is open to guitarists of all nationalities, born after January 1, 1974, (not older than 30 years old). Previous winners of the Competition are not allowed to participate a second time, and the semi-finalists are not allowed to participate more than three times.
Stages of the Competition
First Selection
May 20, 2004.Jury members will examine applications along with demo CDs (10 minutes) and compile a short list of candidates (maximum 15 competitors).
Candidates who have been short-listed for the semi-finals will be notified by June 1, 2004.
Candidates must confirm their participation in writing.
Semi-finals
The candidates qualified for the semi-finals will perform in Montreux in July, 2004 (specific date tba).
A maximum of four competitors will be chosen for the Finals.
Final
Finals will be held in July, 2004 (specific date tba).

Travel and accommodation
Travel and accommodation expenses are to be covered entirely by the candidate.
The MJF Competition office can help, however, by providing addresses of hotels and youth hostels in the area.

TIME Montreux Jazz Solo Piano Competition 2004
In 1999, the Montreux Jazz Festival founded the Solo Piano Competition in memory of the great jazz pianists of the past. So that the tradition of solo jazz piano is perpetuated, promising young players display their talent. The Competition is organised annually as part of the Montreux Jazz Festival. It affords a unique opportunity for young musicians to gain the recognition of an international audience of connoisseurs. The Competition takes place in one of Montreux’s best-known hotels, the Montreux Palace. The peaceful atmosphere provides the perfect environment to appreciate the various performances.
The Competition is held thanks to the support and sponsorship of TIME magazine. The IAJE (International Association of Jazz Educators), NAGRA, Hug Music and Steinway & Sons, the Montreux Conservatory, the Balik Farm and the Montreux Palace are supporting this event.

Details of the Competition

The musical pieces are to be presented for solo piano exclusively.
All performances are open to the public.
The competitors will perform in alphabetical order. The same order will be maintained for the remaining performances.
Semi-finals: Public performances (15 min.) in front of the jury, in July (accurate dates will follow)
Final: The 4 finalists will perform, July (accurate date will follow) (each program 20 min.).
Please note that the pieces presented should be different for the semi-finals and the final.
The ceremony awards will take place after the finale.
