Notas al programa
Tertium Quid is the unexpected result of combining free composition and a restricted combination of intervals of 3rds. Only in two moments is the rule of thirds broken for melodic purposes.  The concept behind the composition was to create a unique atmospherethrough the use of different textures, narrowing the horizontal melodies to the combination of minor, major, ascending, and descending thirds and leaving the vertical harmonies to a less important role, all the while pursuing tonal centers.

After the silence is gently broken by the tam- tam and bass drum, a simple minor third interval opens the piece and develops into a variety of complex lines. The opening section features a dramatic and peaceful ambience while unexplored melodies shyly sproutgiving a preliminary taste of the further development. Only at the end of this first segmentdoes the main motive of the piece initially appear, not to reappear until the third section.

The second section displays a more powerful theme held by the brass leading to an obsessive part upon which the celesta develops variousshapes. This brings a sense of mystery and suspense, as well as a clear conclusion before moving to the final statements of the piece.

The third part is a direct statement of the use of thirds bringing out the power of semi-angular melodic lines along with several fanfares. The piece's grand finale combines elements from the two previous sections, leading the listener to the arrival of something new and unexpected.

---------------------------
