Born in the shadow of Vegreville, Alberta’s giant Ukrainian Easter Egg, John Stetch’s piano ranges from classical to jazz to roots music, that incorporates his own Ukrainian heritage. It is this heritage that he embraced on his groundbreaking solo piano tour-de-force, coincidentally enough entitled, “Ukrainianism”.

Even among jazz aficionados, Stetch is considered a hidden talent. His latest album, “Standards” is an excellent follow up, and offers some deserved notoriety. Stetch’s interpretations on this disc weave a complex, ever-evolving tapestry of sounds and influences. While borrowing from many musical genres, there is no mistaking the innate timing and composition that marks his playing as, not just jazz inspired, but jazz itself.

Stetch’s versatility remains his long-suit; his subtle flair for the abstract brings vitality to his live performances. A mainstay on the Montreal jazz scene for many years, Stetch made the leap to New York to work with his own trio and quartet. He has also worked as a sideman with Rufus Reid for many years, as well as James "Blood" Ulmer and other notable performers.
